MANCHESTER – A three-vehicle crash in Ocean County sent one woman to a trauma center Friday evening after a collision at the intersection of State Highway 70 and Ridgeway Road.

The crash occurred around 5:53 p.m. on June 13, when Manchester Township police responded to the scene and found three damaged vehicles: a blue 2009 Ford Expedition with front-end damage, a black 2022 Honda HR-V with significant passenger-side damage, and a white 2024 GMC Yukon with front-end damage.

According to the preliminary investigation, the Honda HR-V was traveling west on Highway 70 when it attempted a left turn onto Ridgeway Road and failed to yield to oncoming traffic, striking the Ford Expedition. The impact caused the Honda to spin and hit the GMC Yukon, which was stopped on Ridgeway Road.

The Ford was driven by 21-year-old William Woodburn Jr. of Mickleton, who sustained minor injuries but declined hospital transport. The Honda’s driver, 33-year-old Michael Schmidt of Toms River, also had non-life-threatening injuries and refused medical transport.

His passenger, 64-year-old Carol Schmidt of Manchester, was trapped inside the vehicle and had to be extricated by first responders. She was airlifted by RWJ Barnabas Health LifeFlight to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where she is currently listed in stable condition.

The GMC was operated by 35-year-old Araceli Hernandez of Toms River, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to Community Medical Center in Toms River.

Multiple emergency units responded to the scene, including the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Services, Manchester and Ridgeway volunteer fire departments, RWJ paramedics, and Accurate Towing.

The crash remains under investigation by Patrolman Brendan Brush of the Manchester Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit. Authorities believe the failure to yield the right of way was the primary contributing factor.
