TOMS RIVER – Township Police and Hazmat units from neighboring Berkeley Township were called to a Harrison Road house on Sunday from a referral by Toms River Animal Control.

Toms River Police Department Spokesperson Jillian Messina said Officer James Colline responded to the scene where he found 22 rabbits in the backyard and in a shed on the property.

Police said that due to the condition of the shed, the Berkeley Hazmat was called to assist in removing the rabbits.

Messina confirmed that an investigation is on-going at this time and the rabbits are being relocated to the Toms River Animal Shelter for care.

Officer Colline is one of our HLEO (Humane Law Enforcement Officers) officers that investe neglect and cruelty to animals.

Also assisting with the investigation are the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office and Health Department.
