MANCHESTER – Two drivers suffered extensive injuries after a crash Tuesday evening in Manchester Township, police said.

The crash occurred around 6:20 p.m. at the intersection of Routes 547 and 571. A BMW was traveling northbound on Route 547 through the traffic signal at the intersection of Route 571. A Nissan was traveling eastbound on Route 571, and the driver was attempting to make a left turn onto Route 547 northbound when the front end of the BMW made impact with the front end of the Nissan.

According to police, the BMW rotated 180 degrees and struck a traffic signal pole on the northeast corner of the intersection. The Nissan went off the roadway and came to a final rest on the west side of Route 547.

The driver of the BMW, a juvenile from Manchester, suffered extensive injuries to his leg and was transported by ambulance to Community Medical Center. He is currently listed in stable condition, police said.

The driver of the Nissan, identified as 39-year-old Jason Safoschnik of Manchester, sustained internal injuries primarily to the front of his body. As a result, he was flown to Jersey Shore University Medical Hospital by Robert Wood Johnson Barnabas Health’s LifeFlight medevac helicopter, where he is currently listed in stable condition, police said.

Assisting at the scene were EMTs from the Manchester Township Division of Emergency Services, firefighters from Ridgeway Volunteer Fire Department, Manchester Volunteer Fire Department and Robert Wood Johnson Paramedics. The roadway was closed during the investigation and cleanup.

At this time investigation is ongoing, however, failure to observe the traffic signal appears to be the primary contributing factor, police said.

This crash is being investigated by Ptl. Sage Sysol of the department’s Traffic Safety Section.
