JACKSON – Township police have more information on that fatal early morning crash that claimed the lives of two teenagers and left three others in critical condition at a shore area trauma center.
Jackson Township Police Chief Matthew Kunz confirmed to Jersey Shore Online that the single vehicle crash with one driver and four passengers happened in the area of North Hope Chapel Road and New Central Avenue on Friday, May 23. The vehicle had crashed into a tree before bursting into flames.
The Lakewood Scoop was the first to identify the victims as Dovid Yitzchok Handler and Chaim Zelig Beril.
Chief Kunz said the accident was reported by a driver who passed the crash site at around 4:39 a.m.
Jackson Police Lieutenant Fred Meabe said officers had to force their way inside to try and remove the occupants – two had died at the scene – one from the impact of the crash and the other in the fire.
Officers were able to pull two passengers out and the other had been able to escape and was found lying in the road near the vehicle.
The investigation has revealed that the vehicle struck a deer that entered the roadway causing the driver to strike the tree.
