LAKEWOOD – A vehicle heading the wrong way on Route 70 caused several collisions leaving one person in critical condition, police said.
The driver, who has not been named, was on the wrong side of Route 70 at about 5:51 a.m., police said. They crashed into multiple vehicles.
As a result of the crashes, their vehicle ignited and the driver was trapped inside. First responders needed to extricate someone inside and extinguish the fire.
The patient sustained burns and was airlifted to a hospital. They were listed in critical condition, police said. Other people involved in crashes sustained minor injuries and refused medical treatment at the scene.
Lakewood Traffic Safety officers and the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office are actively investigating the cause of the crash.
