JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST — The “sounds of freedom” may be a little louder than usual this month, with Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst warning residents about several days of elevated training noise in June.

The base’s June noise calendar shows high-noise training expected the first week of June, June 9, June 10 and June 14. Those louder periods may include heavy crew weapons training and cratering munitions exercises.

Moderate noise is expected June 8, June 11-13 and June 15-30. Officials said that activity may include rotary-wing aerial gunnery involving .50-caliber weapons, rocket fire and rotary cannons.

Noise levels may change without notice because of weather and training needs. Cloud cover can also affect how far sound travels, officials said.

The last time there was an abunance of noise, locals took to social media out of concern. However, there were plenty of posts reminding people that this is routine and the price of freedom. Some even said if you don’t like the noise, you shouldn’t live near an active military base.

Residents with questions or concerns can call 609-754-2575.
