HOWELL – Local animal rescue, Rescue Ridge, is seeking donations and volunteers to help care for cats and dogs in need. Rescue Ridge is an all-volunteer, non-profit animal welfare organization dedicated to the rescue and placement of stray, neglected, and abused animals, whose volunteers work tirelessly to provide safe, loving environments for homeless dogs, cats, and occasionally other animals as well.

From caring for animals from high-kill facilities to helping local pet owners care for their animals by providing them with a reliable place to get pet food and other goods, to helping animals get adopted, Rescue Ridge provides many services needed to properly care for the animals in local neighborhoods and find them good homes.

Now they are looking for support in their efforts. Since Rescue Ridge is a non-profit, they rely a lot on the community around them to keep them operational.

With the rising expenses of everything nowadays, it is becoming more and more costly to take care of animals properly, meaning there is an increased strain on what the rescue can do and the services it can provide.

According to Marybeth Tkach, one of the volunteers who helps run the whole operation, the most pressing issue for the rescue is medical bills for the animals, which have gone up exponentially over the past few years.

“Over the past few years, medical expenses have increased dramatically. It’s traumatic, and the hospitals are just so expensive that people can’t afford it. It’s crazy. Dog food and cat food have gone up drastically. A lot of people just can’t afford it. It’s so sad,” said Tkach.

Having the animals be looked at by a veterinarian is a must in the adoption process, meaning that it is a great financial undertaking just to get these animals to the point where they can be adopted.

One of the biggest fundraisers of the year for Rescue Ridge is coming up in June, as they are set to host their annual Hollywoof event on June 27 at the Jersey Shore BlueClaws Stadium.

Hollywoof is a large, town fair-like event where all the proceeds from the event go to the Rescue. The event itself features several live music performances, a video game truck, and much more. Tickets for the event cost $45 for adults and $15 for kids in advance and cost $55 for adults and $20 for kids at the door. Those interested in attending the event are encouraged to look at the rescue’s Facebook page for more information.

Those who are looking to donate privately immediately can do so either online through the organization’s website or in person at the Highland Kennel, located at 1424 Maxim Southard Road in Howell, from 8 a.m. to noon or 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. daily. Any sort of donations will help out. Those who are looking to do more than just give money can sign up to be a volunteer or provide any physical supplies the group is looking for, such as pet store gift cards, paper towels, laundry detergent, large garbage bags, crates, pet gates, bleach, gloves, wee-wee pads, dog treats, new dog beds, dog and cat food, cleaning supplies and clumping litter.
