SOUTH TOMS RIVER — A New York man accused of throwing incendiary devices at a vehicle and toward a South Toms River home will remain jailed while his case proceeds, authorities said.
Superior Court Judge Kimarie Rahill ordered Tashaun Normand, 42, of the Bronx, to remain detained in the Ocean County Jail during a hearing Tuesday, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.
Normand faces two counts each of aggravated arson and possession of destructive devices in connection with a March 23 incident.
An investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Arson Squad and other local and county agencies determined that a fire began near the front windshield of a vehicle, according to authorities.
Investigators alleged the fire was deliberately started with an open flame and combustible materials. Normand is accused of constructing incendiary devices and throwing them at the vehicle and in the direction of a nearby residence.
Normand was arrested without incident March 30 by the Tennessee Highway Patrol in Monroe County, Tennessee. He was extradited to New Jersey and has remained in the Ocean County Jail since then.
Billhimer credited county investigators, local agencies and the Tennessee Highway Patrol for their work on the investigation.
Assistant Prosecutor Elizabeth Paterno represented the state during the detention hearing.
The charges are accusations. Normand is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
