LAKEHURST – Classic car owners put a lot of work into their vehicles and that dedication was on full display at the car show hosted by BoldAge PACE.
For example, Everett Ross brought his “29” Mercedes which is a SSK Replicar that he built while in high school in 1980. The Toms River resident said “It was the biggest model car you ever saw.”
They send most of the car to your specifications. The rest he salvaged from junk yards and other second hand sources.
He built it as a labor of love. “I didn’t think I’d still have it 45 years later.”
Another case was Kevin Richard of Manchester. He bought his 1979 Cadillac Coupe de Ville seven years ago. The body was done but he redid the interior, and added wheels and tires. This winter’s project was the grill and steering wheel.
There were about 25 cars at the third annual event that promoted BoldAge PACE. In an effort to welcome families, it also had a bounce house, cotton candy, popcorn, oversized toys, and a photo booth – and all of it was free. A DJ played oldies and announced winners.
There was a BBQ truck on site, but there was also an unusual vehicle offering food. A 1929 Indian motorcycle carried a sidecar that had been reworked by Tom Dilardo of Long Branch to have a Coleman propane stove inside. He was cooking hot dogs and selling them for donations to Soldier On, a nonprofit for veterans.
Melissa Gagliano, executive director of BoldAge Pace, explained that the facility offers a program of all-inclusive care for the elderly. Events like this are a way to invite the community in to learn more about the services they provide.
“We got to talk to a lot of people,” she said. They learned if a mother-in-law or an aunt could be a good candidate for the program.
The event was rescheduled due to weather, but rain was still threatening on the new date, but they still had a nice showing, Gagliano said.
Pace is in 21 counties in New Jersey. This particular region includes Ocean, Monmouth and Middlesex counties, and serves almost 600 participants, she said.
