SEASIDE HEIGHTS – A lit cigarette sparked a fire on part of the Seaside Heights Boardwalk June 14, forcing firefighters to pull up boards and attack the flames from underneath before they could spread, officials said.
The fire broke out near Dupont Avenue after the cigarette ignited the wooden boards, Seaside Heights Fire Department Chief Tim Farrell said. Crews removed sections of the boardwalk and went below the structure to put out the fire.
Farrell said roughly 20 to 40 feet of boards were heavily soaked as firefighters worked to make sure the flames were fully extinguished.
No one was injured in the incident.
