MANCHESTER — Authorities are investigating a serious head-on crash on Route 70 in Manchester Township that sent four people to the hospital, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said the collision occurred around 7:50 p.m. on May 15 near mile marker 34. Police officers from the Manchester Township Police Department responded to the scene after receiving reports of a major motor vehicle accident.

Investigators determined that a 2025 Ford Ranger was traveling eastbound on Route 70 when the driver attempted to pass another vehicle by moving into the westbound lane in what authorities described as an unsafe maneuver.

A 2022 Hyundai Elantra carrying a driver and two passengers was traveling westbound when the pickup truck entered its lane, causing a head-on collision, officials said.

All four occupants involved in the crash were transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune for treatment. Authorities said each victim was listed in stable condition.

According to investigators, officers at the scene detected the smell of alcohol coming from the driver of the Ford Ranger. Police also reported finding an open container of alcohol inside the vehicle. A judge-authorized blood draw was later conducted at the hospital as part of the ongoing investigation.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad, Manchester Township Police Department and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit.
