TOMS RIVER – A Barnegat man charged with killing his wife will remain in the Ocean County Jail until at least next week after his detention hearing was adjourned Friday.
William Garvin appeared virtually before Superior Court Judge Pamela Snyder from the jail’s medical unit. His face was not visible during the brief livestreamed proceeding, which lasted less than two minutes.
Assistant Public Defender Megan Chase requested that the hearing be rescheduled for Tuesday, September 22. Snyder granted the adjournment. An attorney for the state raised no additional issues.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office has filed a motion seeking to keep Garvin detained while the case proceeds. He is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife, Eileen Garvin, inside their Barnegat home.
No evidence was presented during Friday’s appearance, and Garvin did not enter a plea. The charge is an accusation, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
Barnegat police responded to the couple’s residence September 7 after receiving a request for a welfare check. When no one came to the door, officers obtained a key and entered the home, where they discovered Eileen Garvin dead.
Court documents allege she had been dead for more than five hours before officers arrived.
Her death has deeply affected the Barnegat community. Garvin spent 14 years transporting generations of local students as a school bus driver.
Bus 38, which she previously drove, was decorated with purple bunting and turned into a memorial. Her photograph was placed behind the windshield as community members left flowers and other tributes.
Each bus in the Barnegat school district also displayed a purple ribbon in her memory and to raise awareness about domestic violence.
