PLUMSTED — A Bergen County man faces attempted murder and aggravated arson charges after authorities say he left a woman suffering from burns in a wooded area of the township.

Justin Martin, 36, of Saddle Brook, was charged Oct. 16 in connection with the incident a day earlier, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer announced.

Police and emergency medical personnel responded to woods near Hawkin and Success roads around 1:36 p.m. Oct. 15 after a 911 caller reported a woman with burn injuries.

Responders found the woman in distress and took her to Temple University Burn Center in Philadelphia. Authorities said she was listed in stable condition.

Investigators allege Martin caused the woman’s burns and smoke inhalation while the two were in the woods, then drove away, leaving her stranded. Authorities did not disclose how the injuries were inflicted or describe a possible motive. Detectives found Martin in Asbury Park around 12:15 a.m. Oct. 16 and arrested him without incident.

He was taken to the Ocean County Jail, where he remained pending a detention hearing.

The prosecutor’s Major Crime Unit, Plumsted Township police and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit conducted the investigation. Police departments in Asbury Park, Eatontown and Keansburg, along with the Monmouth County Sheriff’s Office, also assisted.

The charges are accusations. Martin is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
