FREEHOLD — Authorities are investigating a shooting that occurred inside the Freehold Borough Public Library Thursday afternoon, leaving a man critically injured, officials said.

Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago and Freehold Borough Police Chief Christopher Colaner said the incident happened at approximately 4:21 p.m. at the library on East Main Street.

According to officials, a male victim sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to a nearby hospital. He remains in critical but stable condition.

Detectives from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Bureau and the Freehold Borough Police Department are actively investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting. No additional details about a suspect or motive were immediately released.

In a joint statement, Santiago and Colaner acknowledged the alarm caused by the incident and emphasized that investigators are working diligently to identify those responsible.

“Prosecutor Santiago and Chief Colaner understand how frightening yesterday’s incident was for those in the area,” the statement said. “Our detectives are working around the clock, actively pursuing every lead, and are committed to holding the individuals involved accountable.”
