OCEAN COUNTY — A 21-year-old Jackson man was arrested after fleeing officers during a surveillance operation targeting suspected drug activity in Lakewood, according to police.
Members of the Lakewood Police Department’s Street Crimes Unit said they were conducting the operation when they observed behavior they believed was consistent with narcotics activity. When officers approached, the suspect ran, prompting a brief foot pursuit, police said.
Officers caught the man a short time later and took him into custody without further incident, authorities said.
Police said a search led to the recovery of suspected controlled dangerous substances, drug paraphernalia, a digital scale and a folding knife.
Chase Baum of Jackson was charged with wandering to obtain CDS, obstruction by flight, possession of CDS, possession with intent to distribute CDS, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a weapon during a CDS offense.
Authorities said Baum was taken to the Ocean County Jail.
Police said the arrest is part of the department’s ongoing efforts to address drug activity in the community.
The charges are accusations, and Baum is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
