LAKEWOOD — A 20-year-old pedestrian was critically injured after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday night, police said.

Lakewood Township police officers responded to the intersection of James Street and Ridgeway Place at about 9:59 p.m. on July 21 following a report of a pedestrian crash.

Officers found the Lakewood resident unconscious and receiving emergency care from Hatzolah. The victim was transported to Jersey Shore University Medical Center and remained in critical condition, authorities said.

A preliminary investigation found that the driver had been traveling west on James Street and was turning onto Ridgeway Place when the pedestrian was struck.

Police said the driver remained at the scene, called emergency services and showed no indications of impairment.

The Lakewood Police Department’s Traffic and Safety Unit is investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

“Our thoughts are with the victim and their loved ones during this difficult time,” Police Chief Gregory Meyer said. “Our Traffic and Safety Unit is conducting a thorough investigation to determine exactly what occurred.”

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information that could assist investigators is asked to contact the Lakewood Township Police Department.
