POINT PLEASANT BEACH – A pedestrian was hospitalized Friday morning after police said he ran from federal immigration agents and was struck by a vehicle on Route 35.
Point Pleasant Beach police responded at about 9:05 a.m. July 31 to the crash on Route 35 North near the west side train station platform, Police Chief Robert J. Kowalewski said.
Investigators determined the pedestrian had fled from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents who were attempting to take him into custody. Police said he entered the roadway while running away and was hit by a motor vehicle.
The man suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening. He was treated at the scene before the Point Pleasant First Aid and Emergency Squad transported him to a local hospital for additional evaluation and treatment.
Borough police said they were not involved in the ICE operation and had not been notified that federal immigration enforcement activity was taking place in Point Pleasant Beach. Officers learned about the operation only after they were dispatched to investigate the crash.
The Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office was notified. Authorities said additional questions about the enforcement action should be directed to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security or ICE.
