FREEHOLD – A New York man has been charged with stealing nearly $500,000 from his Ocean Township employer over a three-year period, Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago said Tuesday.

Joseph Hardoon, 28, of Valley Stream, is charged with second-degree theft by unlawful taking. Prosecutors said Hardoon took $497,500 from the company between 2021 and 2024 while working as its bookkeeper.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Financial Crimes and Special Prosecutions Unit began investigating after the business reported the theft.

Hardoon was charged Monday and released on a summons, pending future court proceedings in Monmouth County Superior Court.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant Prosecutor Michael Costanzo. Hardoon is represented by William Cunningham, an attorney based in Toms River.

Authorities noted that Hardoon is presumed innocent unless convicted in court.
