BARNEGAT – Five recreational vehicles were destroyed in a fast-moving fire at Sun Retreat RV Park on Saturday, prompting a large-scale response from multiple fire departments and emergency agencies across Ocean County.

At this point, the cause of the incident is under investigation by the Ocean County Fire Marshal’s Office. At the peak of the incident, smoke was seen from as far away as Seaside Heights billowing over the area.

Jersey Shore Online was at the scene shortly after the incident began. Resident Wayne Fisch said he heard a loud explosion before seeing the flames and smoke. While maintaining a safe distance, he was able to capture some photos of the engulfed units.

The Barnegat Fire Company was dispatched to the campground at 11:19 a.m. on June 20 for a reported RV fire. While firefighters were responding, Ocean County Communications advised crews that the situation had escalated, with two RVs actively burning.

Recognizing the potential for rapid fire spread in the densely packed campground, officials requested tanker support from the Warren Grove Fire Company and the Stafford Township Volunteer Fire Company before arriving on scene.

Upon arrival, Chief 1100 confirmed that multiple RVs were involved and established incident command. Additional mutual aid resources were immediately called from Stafford Township, Eagleswood Township, Forked River and Waretown fire departments.

Emergency medical and specialized response units also assisted, including the Barnegat First Aid Squad, Stafford EMS Rehab Unit, Berkeley Township Hazmat Team, Lakewood Hazmat Team and the New Jersey State Forest Fire Service.

Fire officials credited the Forest Fire Service with helping prevent the blaze from spreading into nearby wooded areas. Crews conducted suppression efforts and backfiring operations to protect surrounding forest land from ignition.

Firefighters remained on scene for approximately three hours, with the final units clearing the area around 2:30 p.m.

Although five RVs were ultimately lost in the fire, officials said coordinated efforts by responding agencies prevented the flames from spreading to additional vehicles and nearby woodland.

No injuries were reported.

Barnegat Fire Company officials thanked all mutual aid partners who responded, as well as the Barnegat Ladies Auxiliary and Stafford Ladies Auxiliary for providing support and assistance to emergency responders during the incident.
