BERKELEY — The Seaside Heights Police Department will begin providing police services to Berkeley Township residents living on Pelican Island under a new shared services agreement.
The change took effect at 4 p.m. July 8, according to a joint announcement from Berkeley Township Mayor John Bacchione and Police Chief Kevin Santucci.
Under the agreement, Seaside Heights officers will handle all police calls in the Berkeley Township portion of the island, including emergency response and routine police matters.
Township officials said the arrangement is intended to improve coverage, response times and the efficient use of resources by both departments.
“The decision has been made in the best interests of the community and both agencies to ensure proper and efficient police coverage and emergency response,” Bacchione and Santucci said in the announcement.
Officials said both municipalities remain focused on maintaining public safety for residents and visitors.
Anyone needing police assistance for a nonemergency matter in the affected area should call the Seaside Heights Police Department at 732-793-1800. Emergencies should be reported by calling 911.
