Around 4:02 p.m., officers responded to the intersection of Route 70 and Route 571 regarding a crash involving two cars.

According to police, 55-year-old Donna Gerhardt of Whiting was driving eastbound on Route 70 in red 2008 Mercury Milan. Gerhardt attempted to make a left turn onto 571 northbound in front of black 2002 Toyota Tundra, driven by 30-year-old Casey McCarter of Browns Mills. McCarter was traveling westbound on Route 70, police said.

Subsequently, McCarter impacted Gerhardt’s vehicle on the passenger side, pushing the car off the roadway and into the traffic signal post. McCarter’s truck rotated counterclockwise and stopped in the intersection facing eastbound, police said.

McCarter suffered extensive injuries including a head injury and was transported by ambulance to Jersey Shore University Hospital in Neptune. His front seat passenger, 65-year-old John McCarter of Browns Mills, suffered head and facial injuries and was also transported to Jersey Shore University Hospital.
