TOMS RIVER – In a tumultuous election year, there are many messages vying for the public’s attention, and newspapers continue to be a trusted source of information. However, it becomes difficult knowing who to trust.
Imitation is the greatest form of flattery, but a one-time newspaper called The Toms River Sun has hit the stands, and it uses the exact same fonts as Micromedia’s Toms River Times for the front banner of the paper. This could lead some casual readers to mistake the two.
Furthermore, some of the Suns were found in newspaper stands that are reserved for the Toms River Times at Wawa locations in town. This is technically stealing because Micromedia pays a distribution company for those stand locations.
Another financial issue is that advertisers support The Toms River Times for its unbiased, factual reporting. Micromedia wishes to assure their advertisers and their readers that they are not affiliated with The Toms River Sun. It is paid for by the Committee to Elect Daniel Rodrick.
Rodrick apologized for the papers getting in the wrong areas on the racks.
“I don’t know how the newspapers got there. My people weren’t told to do that but I’ll take care of it,” he said.
Micromedia Vice President/COO Jason Allentoff said “We know that politics can sometimes be a dirty business. However, our media organization always presents all sides of the political aisle and does not endorse candidates. To see a deception like this is troublesome, especially since politics has become so nasty. We would like to apologize to our readers and advertisers who may have inadvertently picked this political ad up, thinking it was our paper.”
Micromedia marked 28 years in business this year. For the last 18 years, residents in Toms River have trusted The Toms River Times for a high-quality, community paper with accurate reporting.
