JACKSON – A vehicle fire in a residential driveway spread to the outside of a nearby home Saturday before firefighters were able to stop the flames from moving farther into the residence, officials said.

The Jackson Mills Volunteer Fire Company was dispatched on June 27 for a reported vehicle fire on Elm Street. While crews were responding, they were told the burning Ford pickup truck was parked close to a house, prompting the incident to be upgraded to a structure fire.

Chief Stan O’Brien Sr. arrived first and found that flames had reached the exterior of the home. A working fire was declared, bringing additional Jackson fire units to the scene.

Firefighters stretched handlines and attacked the blaze quickly, keeping the fire contained to the vehicle and limiting damage to the home’s exterior, officials said. Crews remained at the property afterward to check for hot spots and complete overhaul operations.

No injuries were reported.

Video provided by local resident Livy Genevrino showed the vehicle fully engulfed as firefighters worked to bring the fire under control.

Fire Official Stanley O’Brien Jr. investigated the blaze and determined it was accidental, caused by a mechanical failure in the vehicle’s engine compartment.

Jackson Mills Volunteer Fire Company and Jackson Fire District No. 4 thanked the agencies that assisted at the scene. Officials also reminded residents to move away immediately and call 911 if a vehicle catches fire, and never open the hood because doing so can intensify the flames.
