STAFFORD — An 82-year-old Manahawkin woman died three days after a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Route 72 and Mill Creek Road, police said.
The collision happened at about 2:24 p.m. July 10 when an eastbound Pontiac driven by Victor Costa, 72, of Manahawkin, went through a red light on Route 72, according to a preliminary investigation by Stafford Township police.
The Pontiac struck a Subaru driven by Johanna Dougherty, 69, of Absecon, which was traveling north on Mill Creek Road, police said.
Stafford Township Emergency Medical Services evaluated everyone involved in the crash. Janet Papovitch, 82, a front-seat passenger in the Pontiac, was taken to Southern Ocean Medical Center with serious internal injuries.
Hospital staff later arranged for Papovitch to be transferred to Jersey Shore University Medical Center for a higher level of care. She died from her injuries July 13, police said.
Costa and Dougherty were also taken to Southern Ocean Medical Center with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening.
The Stafford Township Police Department’s Traffic Safety Bureau is continuing to investigate the crash.
Witnesses or anyone with surveillance or dashboard camera footage are asked to contact Traffic Safety Officer Christopher Smith at ctsmith@staffordpdnj.gov or 609-597-1189, ext. 8474.
