OCEAN COUNTY — A 20-year-old woman was killed and an infant was injured after both were thrown from a vehicle during a crash on the Garden State Parkway in Lacey Township, according to New Jersey State Police.
The accident happened on August 7 right before the evening commute
Iisiz Lopez, of New York City, was pronounced dead at the scene, State Police Sgt. Jeffrey Lebron said. The infant sustained minor injuries.
The crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m. near milepost 75.8 on the northbound Parkway.
Police said Johan Mendez, 26, also of New York City, was driving a Toyota sedan north when the vehicle left the roadway to the left and struck a guardrail. The Toyota then returned to the travel lanes and collided with a northbound Hyundai sedan.
The impact caused Lopez, who was riding in the back seat, and the infant to be ejected from the Toyota, according to police.
Mendez and two additional passengers in the Toyota suffered minor injuries and were transported to a hospital for treatment. The Hyundai’s driver, whose identity was not released, also sustained minor injuries.
The crash shut down the Parkway’s northbound lanes in the area for nearly three hours. The roadway reopened shortly before 6 p.m.
State Police said the cause of the crash remains under investigation.
