TOMS RIVER — A 74-year-old Point Pleasant Borough man has admitted to possessing child sexual abuse material after investigators said they found more than 1,000 illegal files on electronic devices seized from his home.
James Vavra pleaded guilty June 18 before Superior Court Judge Guy P. Ryan to possession of child sexual abuse material, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said.
Vavra is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 28. Prosecutors said they will seek a 10-year term in New Jersey State Prison. He also would be subject to parole supervision for life and required to register as a Megan’s Law offender.
The investigation began with a referral from the New Jersey State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which received a cyber tip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. Authorities said the tip involved someone uploading child sexual abuse material online.
Detectives with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crime Squad traced the activity to an IP address connected to a Point Pleasant Borough home and later identified Vavra as the suspect, officials said.
On Oct. 23, 2025, detectives from the Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crime Squad, Point Pleasant Borough Police Department and Ocean County Regional SWAT Team executed a court-authorized search warrant at Vavra’s home. Several electronic devices were seized, and a forensic review later uncovered more than 1,000 items of child sexual abuse material, authorities said.
Vavra was arrested at the Point Pleasant Borough Police Department and taken to the Ocean County Jail. He was later released under New Jersey’s bail reform guidelines.
Billhimer credited Supervising Assistant Prosecutor Shanon Chant-Berry, who is handling the case for the state, along with the Prosecutor’s Office High Tech Crime Squad, Point Pleasant Borough police, Ocean County Regional SWAT Team, New Jersey State Police Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
