MANAHAWKIN — Authorities are investigating after an ICE agent was reportedly struck by a vehicle during an attempted apprehension on Route 72 near Mermaid Drive, Stafford police said.
The Stafford Township Police Department Communications Center received a report of the incident shortly after it happened. According to information provided to police, ICE agents were attempting to take a suspect into custody when the person fled in a vehicle and struck one of the agents.
The agent fired at the vehicle, reportedly hitting it, police said. The suspect left the area in the vehicle and had not been found as of the latest update.
The ICE agent suffered injuries, though the extent of those injuries was not immediately known. Police said it was also unclear whether the suspect was injured.
Authorities said there is no known threat to the public.
Stafford police said they were not involved in the ICE operation and were not assisting with it. The department said it follows the New Jersey Attorney General’s Immigrant Trust Directive.
Police said their role is limited to directing traffic and securing the scene. The investigation is being handled by another agency.
Drivers were asked to avoid the area, as the investigation was expected to continue for several hours. Police said alternate routes are available through the Ocean Acres section of Stafford Township to get around the closures.
Additional information is expected to be released when it becomes available.
