FREEHOLD – The president of Freehold Township Little League has been accused of stealing more than $73,000 from the organization over nearly three years, authorities said.
Donald Petito, 42, of Freehold, was charged with third-degree theft by unlawful taking or disposition, according to Monmouth County Prosecutor Raymond S. Santiago.
The investigation began after a tip was submitted to Monmouth County Crime Stoppers. Detectives with the prosecutor’s Financial Crimes and Special Prosecutions Unit found that Petito allegedly started filing false reimbursement requests in March 2022, seeking money for purchases that were either inflated in value or never made, officials said.
Authorities also allege Petito took money from the league’s Venmo account by transferring funds first to his personal Venmo account and then to a business account he controlled.
Petito was served with the charge by summons and is scheduled for future proceedings in Monmouth County Superior Court.
Anyone with information about Petito’s activities is asked to contact Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office Detective Debra Bassinder at 800-533-7443.
The case is being prosecuted by Monmouth County Assistant Prosecutor Kristen Anastos. Information about Petito’s attorney was not available.
The charge is an accusation. Petito is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
