BAY HEAD — Two people were hospitalized and a dog suffered burns after a fire and reported flash explosion aboard a 34-foot boat at Sanzari Marina following fueling, according to the Bay Head Fire Department.
Bay Head firefighters and police helped evacuate the occupants and dog when they arrived. Firefighters from Bay Head and Mantoloking stretched hoses, secured a water supply and ventilated the vessel after finding elevated fuel vapors and signs of fire.
Two injured people were taken to an area hospital. The department did not provide details about the severity of their injuries or the dog’s condition.
Emergency crews remained at the marina for about 75 minutes.
Bay Head firefighters had previously held two training exercises at the same location involving similar emergencies. The department credited that preparation with helping crews coordinate their response.
Also assisting were the Point Pleasant First Aid & Emergency Squad, Mantoloking police and Ocean County EMS coordinators.
The Ocean County Fire Marshal and New Jersey State Police are investigating the cause.
